Community Database

My husband and I have been tossing around an idea for a while now of creating a searchable database of communities to help women more easily find a compatible community.  It would be a free tool for both the communities and the women who are discerning.  I sketched out some criteria to start with, but I’d like to hear from you what you would find helpful.

The criteria I’ve listed so far are:

  • Habit
  • Type of Order (contemplative, apostolic, monastic)
  • Size of order as a whole
  • Size of communities within the order
  • Communal prayer
  • Primary ministries/work
  • Age Limits
  • Education requirements.

What other criteria would you find helpful to have in a database?  I’ve thought about location, but not sure how to do that.  But programming it is my husband’s job.

If you are active on other vocation boards or e-mail lists, please share this with others so we can get as much input as possible.  Thanks in advance for your help!

One thing that wold be helpful is the language of the community, e.g. english or spanish. Or maybe they use latin for the mass.

The age limits would be very helpful. There are so many great web pages, but the data bases are disconnected. A late vocation has to do a tremendous amount of surfing to realize how many opportunities there are for women in their 50s, the door is NOT closed. Just hard to find at times. And sometimes the level of education can open doors. If you have a nursing degree or can relatively easily become a credentialed teacher, the opportunity is greater since the candidate can participate in the work of the community with out having to be trained for years.

If you mention habit, it might be nice to share if the habit has 12 yards of fabric (traditional) or if it is modified to meet the times (veil and suit).

I’ve been considering the Carthusian order but am finding that there are no true Carthusian orders here in the US for nuns. So then, I thought, perhaps, the Cistercian order may be another option since the order is strict Benedictine–there again I’m having difficulties finding traditional, eremitic orders here is the US.

To make a long story short: There are eremitic abbeys stretched across the US from east to west for monks but few for nuns, and even those don’t appear to be traditional abbeys.

Could some offer some guidance in this area?

It would be nice if there was more current blogs and information on this website.
    Thanks
